VON DEN VIELEN WELTEN
, die der
Mensch nicht von der Natur geschenkt
bekam, sondern sich aus eigenem Geist
erschafen hat, ist die Welt der Bücher
die größte“. Diese Worte Hermann
Hesses sind angesichts der heutigen
vielfältigen Aufgaben der Bibliotheken
geradezu prophetisch zu nennen. Seit
der Gründung der Deutschen Büche-
rei in Leipzig vor mehr als 100 Jahren
hat sich nicht nur das Bibliothekswe-
sen grundlegend verändert und stetig
weiter entwickelt. Die digitale Vernet-
zung und die Zunahme elektronischer
Publikationen in den letzten beiden
Jahrzehnten haben zu einem grundle-
genden Wandel der Anforderungen an
die Erschließung und Bereitstellung
unseres kulturellen Erbes geführt.
Bibliotheken werden heutzutage nicht
mehr als „Verwalter der Bücher“ wahr-
genommen; der einstige Zettelkata-
log hat sogar nur noch nostalgischen
Wert. Bibliotheken stellen ihre Er-
schließungsdaten längst für jedermann
online zur Recherche, aber auch für
die Weiternutzung zur Verfügung. Sie
haben sich dem Nutzer geöfnet und
tragen damit dem deutlich gestiegenen
Interesse am Zugang zu Bildung, Kul-
tur und Information auch vorzüglich
Rechnung.
In den vergangenen Jahren haben Bi-
bliotheken, Archive und Museen gro-
ße Anstrengungen unternommen, ihre
Bestände zu digitalisieren und ins Netz
zu stellen. Portale wie die Deutsche
Digitale Bibliothek und die Europea-
na bilden zentrale Einstiegspunkte für
Kulturinteressierte und Wissenschaft-
ler. Sie bieten der breiten Öfentlich-
keit ein Schaufenster in die reiche Welt
unseres kulturellen Erbes und ermög-
lichen einen Einblick in die Schätze,
die allein in Deutschland in mehr als
30.000 Kultureinrichtungen bewahrt
werden. So wird unsere Kultur überall
erlebbar!
Doch für die Zukunft bleibt noch
viel zu tun: Nur ein Bruchteil unseres
Kulturguts ist bereits digitalisiert. Hier
bedarf es gemeinsamer Anstrengungen,
um die Digitalisierung systematisch vo-
ranzubringen und die Digitalisate für
die Zukunft zu sichern.
Ich freue mich sehr, dass die Deut-
sche Nationalbibliothek zur Konferenz
„Crossing Borders – The Future of Ac-
cess“ nach Frankfurt am Main eingela-
den hat, um im nationalen und interna-
tionalen Kontext den Dialog über den
Zugang zu unserer Kultur anzuregen.
Der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek dan-
ke ich dafür, dass sie sich des Themas
angenommen hat und dieses seit vielen
Jahren aktiv mitgestaltet. Allen Teilneh-
merinnen und Teilnehmern der Konfe-
renz wünsche ich spannende Vorträge
und eine angeregte Diskussion!

that were not
presented to human beings by nature but were
created from their own minds, the world of
books is the greatest“. These words of Hermann
Hesse could almost be called prophetic in view
of the multitude of roles played by libraries to-
day. Since the Deutsche Bücherei was founded
in Leipzig more than 100 years ago, it is not
only librarianship that has fundamentally
changed and undergone continuous develop-
ment. Digital networking and the growing
number of electronic publications over the
last two decades have lead to a fundamental
change in the demands on the way our cultural
heritage is indexed and made available to us.
Libraries today are no longer seen as “keepers
of books“; the card catalogue of old really only
has nostalgic value now. For a long time now,
libraries have made their indexing data avail-
able online to everyone for both retrieval and
re-use. They have opened themselves up to users
and, in doing so, are responding impressively
to the growing interest in access to learning,
culture and information.
Over recent years, libraries, archives and mu-
seums have made huge eforts to digitise their
holdings and put them on the internet. Por-
tals like the German Digital Library and
Europeana constitute central points of access
for academics and those interested in culture.
They provide a window onto the rich world
of our cultural heritage to a wide public and
ofer a glimpse of the treasures that are kept in
over 30,000 cultural institutions in Germany
alone. As a result, our culture can be experi-
enced everywhere!
But there is still plenty to do in the future: only
a fraction of our cultural assets has already
been digitised. A united efort is required here to
move digitalisation forward systematically and
to safeguard digital objects for the future.
I am delighted that the German National Li-
brary has invited to the conference “Crossing
Borders – The Future of Access“ in Frankfurt
am Main to stimulate dialogue about access to
our culture in the national and international
context. I would like to thank the German Na-
tional Library for addressing this issue and help-
ing to shape it for many years. I trust that all the
participants in the conference will fnd the pa-
pers interesting and the discussion stimulating!
